This month we present a selection that leads to wines that may have been forgotten in recent years with the major changes and innovations that has experienced viticulture. Actually, we present a selection of wines from one of the more traditional producers of Rioja. A trip back to the classics seems an extremely rewarding experience, especially when the chosen winery, Bodegas Riojanas, has been owned by the same family for nearly 125 years ago. The selection is made up of two pair of bottles of the most classic “reservas” of the winery, Viña Albina Reserva Selección 2007 y el Monte Real Selección de la Familia 2007 and two bottles of Gran Albina Vendimia 2009 who reflects a different way of doing things regarding the two previous classics. The classic reservas, both Vina Albina and Monte Real, each with its own personality respond to traditional Rioja winemaking with long aging in American oak barrels and a later rest in bottle for over a year. The differences are mainly in the blend. While Viña Albina includes varieties "mazuelo" and "Graciano" on predominant base of Tempranillo, Monte Real is 100% Tempranillo. Gran Albina Vendimia 2009 is quite different: shorter period in oak wood, mainly new wood, and a very unusual blending for a Rioja wine. Actually, tempranillo,"mazuelo" and "Graciano" share equal parts of total composition. We have here a great Rioja but a different Rioja. All those wines are likely to improve in the bottle over time, particularly the Gran Albina that can reach its optimal maturity slightly later than the other two, preferably consumed before 2018.
